EVERYDAY CONVERSATIONS
How to handle criticism.
Give yourself time to understand the feedback. Ask for specifics, consider what is useful, and decide what you want to say next.
Ask for something specific.
A broad comment such as “This won’t work” can be hard to act on. Ask which part the other person means and what they would change. A concrete example gives you a clearer point to discuss.
TRY SAYING THIS“Could you point to one thing you’d change, and tell me why?”
Keep the conversation about the work.
You can consider the feedback while also naming a personal remark or dismissive tone. Bring the discussion back to the idea, the action, or the result you are trying to improve.
TRY SAYING THIS“I’m open to feedback about the work. Let’s keep it about the idea.”
Choose your next step.
If a point is useful, say what you will do with it. If you disagree, explain your reasoning and ask what would help resolve the concern. You can also take time to think before committing to a change.
TRY SAYING THIS“I’d like to look at that point properly. I’ll come back with a response tomorrow.”
